Vintage Vespa: a CG scooter in a real garage

A CG Vespa tracked into live-action footage of a working garage. The scooter had to sit in the shot as if it had always been there, with the same light, the same camera and the same imperfections as the footage around it.

How it was made

Putting CG into real footage

  1. Track the camera

The real camera move was tracked, so the CG scooter stays locked to the floor as the shot moves.

  2. Model and look-dev

Painted bodywork, chrome and rubber built to read as a real, used scooter.

  3. Match the light

Lit to match the garage, so highlights and shadows fall where the real lights put them.

  4. Comp

Shadows, grade and grain matched to the footage in Nuke, so nothing gives the CG away.
